Okt 22: Apple und GT Advanced Technologies gehen getrennte Wege
Als kürzlich bekannt wurde, dass Apples ausgewählter Partner für die Saphirglas-Produktion Insolvenz anmelden musste, war die Überraschung zunächst groß, hatte Cupertino doch diverse Millionen US-Dollar in GT Advanced Technologies gepumpt, um sich auf diese Weise ein Exklusivrecht auf das produzierte Saphierglas zu sichern. In der anschließenden Begründung machte GTAT dann unter anderem Apples hohe Anforderungen an die Herstellung des Produkts mitverantwortlich für die Insolvenz. Nun hat man einen Schlussstrich unter die Zusammenarbeit gezogen und sich nach Aussage des Anwalts von GT Advanced Technologies freundschaftlich getrennt. Von Seiten GTATs wird laut Fortune hierzu der Verkauf von 2.000 Brennöfen und durch die dabei erzielten Erlöse die Begleichung der 439 Millionen US-Dollar Forderung von Apple eingefordert. GTAT und Apple hatten Anfang des Jahres gemeinsam eine Fabrik zur Saphirglasproduktion in Arizona in Betrieb genommen, die nun wahrscheinlich von Apple in Eigenregie oder mit einem anderen Partner weiter betreiben wird. Sämtliche Geschäftsbeziehungen mit GTAT sind damit beendet. Unklar ist nach wie vor, wie sich dieser Umstand auf Apples Pläne hinsichtlich des Einsatzes von Saphirglas in künftigen Produkten auswirken wird. Angeblich plant Cupertino neben verschiedenen Modellen der Apple Watch, auch das iPhone in Zukunft mit einem Saphirglas-Display auszustatten.
